Sport has historically played an important role in all societies, be it in the form of competitive sport, physical activity or play. But one may wonder: what does sport have to do with the helping others around the world?  In fact, sport presents a natural partnership for supporting development around the world.  Sport and play are human rights that must be respected and enforced worldwide; sport has been increasingly recognized and used as a low-cost and high-impact tool in humanitarian, development and peace-building efforts, not only by the United Nations system but also by non-governmental organizations (NGOs), governments, development agencies, sports federations, armed forces and the media. Sport can no longer be considered a luxury within any society but is rather an important investment in the present and future, particularly in developing countries.

Why Cuba?

The political climate in Cuba and world politics is about to shift.  After 60 years of isolation from the rest of the world, the next few years will bare witness to a once in a generation social and political shift in Cuba.    Resulting from the six decade embargo on this island nation, there has been limited to no opportunity for foreigners to come in and positively influence the community. Likewise, brands and companies have had almost no had the opportunity to showcase offerings including; equipment, gear, apparel, coaching, nutrition or otherwise.

The lifting of the embargo makes this an ideal time to take part in this transition. It is an opportunity that can only be seized once and cannot be missed.  Cuba’s sport and development programs are about to enter a period of exponential growth, and now is the time to become part of this trailblazing opportunity and help to spearhead this change.

Building Opportunity

February 2017 will be our second international project and we’ll be travelling to Cuba with fellow athletes and Canadians to race in the Havana Sprint and Half Iron triathlons.

While we’re down there a small group of us will also be visiting Cuba’s National Sports School in Havana and engaging with the National Cycling and Triathlon programs.  Through the generous contributions of our partners we will be providing equipment and athletic apparel to athletes in Cuba and help to tell the stories of hard working athletes outside of Canada and the United States.

Giving

From now until then we will be collecting new and used gear donation at Tri-It Multisport. We will be bringing this gear directly to athletes and sports directors in Havana, Varadero, and Santiago.  Through our contacts in Cuba we have identified the following needs:

    • Heart Rate Monitors
    • GPS Watches / Bike Computers
    • Bike Power meters
    • Running shoes size 39-43
    • Bike Tires and Tubes
    • Shimano/SRAM Chains and cassettes
    • Rollers and Bike trainers
    • Swim goggles
    • Road Bikes / Frames (please contact)
